In cities that are not traditionally considered very Black, it can seem difficult to find spaces that are Black. You may search for things like “Black hookah lounge near me” or even “best hookah lounge near me” especially if you are in Nashville. Unlike cities like Houston or Atlanta where you can find hookah at every corner, it may be difficult to find here. Even when it comes to finding Black night clubs in Nashville, TN, you may have some struggles. But, I am here to help. Now, this list does not include ALL the places you can hookah in Nashville. This list is all the places BLACK people hookah in Nashville. Yes, there are other places, yes Black people may go there but I know the vibe you are looking for and these are the places that will give it to you. Also, if you like hookah you know…

Family, it’s that time of year again. Despite currently being in a pandemic, some of you will be traveling to see family for the holidays. This is some of the best eating we get to do all year. Whether it is friends’ events or family events, the holidays are a time to fellowship with the people you love and even some people you are supposed to love. With that being said, there are some shitty downsides to this time of year. You know the questions and pressures about dating, your job, and overall about your life. I hate it and I KNOW you hate it too. My favorite holiday greeting is “you’ve gained weight.” First of all, saying “you’ve gained weight,” “when are you going to get married,” or even “when are you having kids” is the shittiest way to greet someone. And there is no exception to this, whether…

This morning I had an 8:30 am flight. As always, I pack at the last minute, finish up my chores at home at the last minute, and hope I make it out the door with everything I need. Someone, please remind me not to book a morning flight in the middle of the week, during week 5 of the semester, and a pandemic! This shit had my anxiety at an all-time high but I thought I could pull it off, and, I did, I hope.  Less than 5 minutes from my house anxiety came over me like a tidal wave and I thought, “I feel like I forgot something.” I swear any time I travel this thought crosses my mind as I begin to leave my house. Yet, each time I tuck that anxiety down by saying, “Whatever you don’t have, oh well, or just buy it when you get…

At my age completing college can be challenging and even overwhelming at times. When you are a teenager who is freshly coming into college you are likely to have one main responsibility, college. As an adult student, I have to manage more than just college. I must manage all my responsibilities including college, work, my personal life, and my health. Paying for school without any additional financial help makes those responsibilities even more challenging than it is. Up against the odds, I know that I am diligent and strong enough to not let my responsibilities keep me from my goal. I completed three semesters at a community college with one semester off before being admitted into Belmont, so I am mostly still mentally prepared to be in school. I know I will have to make more adjustments this spring semester after having a semester off. Balance and sacrifice are the…

Over the last year and a half I have been pursuing the completion of my collegiate degree. Just know many celebrities had their big break well into their 30’s and even 40’s. You do not have to follow the standards that society may push about when you should do something. Just know it’s never too late if you really want it. Recently I had to write a college entrance essay for Belmont University and this is what I had to say: If life is rooted in how we classify who we are or even by statistical findings we would live in a world where our choices could be predicted and automated. Despite knowing statistics and classifications hold value, I respectfully disagree that they define the course of my life or who I am. Statistically, the course of my life would look very different, I would have chosen a different college…

An old friend who recently moved back to Nashille explained to me that she used to try and compare Nashville to home (California) but after moving back home she realized Nashville is a cool city. She couldn’t see it before because I was trying to compare the two but later she saw the dopeness. This made me think, Nashille IS pretty dope. With the beautiful weather on the rise, the hotline has been blinging… you know friends wanting to hang out or long lost socialites who hide during the winter. This is the time of the year that sets the standard for the summer and here we are with long lines, no parking (day or night), packed malls, and no seats in bars and night clubs. Man, how I love this time of year!! Nashville has so much to offer, I mean, I know it’s not a LA, ATL, Miami…

After living in Nashville for almost 11 years, I have stumbled upon an underground or secret society of culture. For some of those 11 years, I was stuck in the same environments doing the same things and complaining about the lack of culture in the city. During that period culture might not have come close to what is happening in the city now. Others like me were seeking something different and relevant to their personalities and the desires of their soul. Because let’s face it, culture comes from a mix of hardships and soul. People develop creativity by expressing how they feel in many different fashions. Some people paint, sing, dance, graffiti, write or however they deem necessary. So, for someone like me, finding this secret society of culture in Nashville is great….. Except… gentrification could potentially kill what has become. Gentrification is very big and in your face in…
