Being a woman who is Black and gay is nothing like being a woman, being a Black woman, or even simply being Black. Adversity comes with being a woman, being Black, and especially being a Black woman. Unlike Black men, Black women deal with adversity from men of all colors including Black men. Unlike white women, Black women deal with adversity because they are Black. Adding a dash of gay in the mix changes the game because not only do you deal with adversity for being Black and a woman, now you deal with adversity from Black women simply because you like the same sex. Do we need to make a list? Adversity can come from some or all of these places; non-Black men, non-Black women, black men, and straight Black women. Although there is a lot of adversity to talk about, let’s focus on the most important. As Black…

So this is my fourth week working from home. For many Nashvillians, they did not see this coming the way that I did because my entire family is in California. Most of them in Oakland experienced a Shelter-In-Place before any other area had even heard of it. I knew what was on the horizon but like many of us, I was not prepared for what was coming the next few weeks, and it is taking a toll on me mentally. Oh, and all the eating is trying to take a toll on me physically lol. All, and all, I was desperate to find something to make my life feel normal again.. well as normal as it could feel. After a week or so at home, I started to experience chest pain; it felt like someone had kicked me with two feet in my chest. Now, I didn’t have any restricted…
What is an Easter Lily? The Easter lily (Lilium longiflorum) is a perennial bulb with large, white, trumpet-shaped flowers and wonderful fragrance. Often known as the trumpet lily among gardeners, this plant is called the Easter lily in its role as a traditional Easter-time treat. Being in control of your life is a tough task and is not for the faint of heart. It takes facing hard truths and opening yourself up to criticism. A good place to start learning how to be better at being yourself is through reading and learning from other people. As you all may know, I am finishing my bachelor’s degree and in one of my classes this semester I was required to read a book called The Art of Possibility by Benjamin Zander & Rosamund Stone Zander. This book talked about a number of ways to change your approach to life but one that stuck out to me the most is “Being the Board.” The idea of “Being the Board” is what the Zanders called the hardest of the principles to learn but the most important. The Art of Possibility was written by Benjamin Zander who is a conductor…

We have all been in interviews and they can be awkward. Minimize your awkwardness by preparing for your interview by going through test questions with a friend so that you are sharp and ready. When interviewing there is always an area I struggled with, which is when the interviewer asks me if I have any questions for them and I quickly say no. I learned from several HR professionals that asking questions and researching the company prior to the interview will give you an advantage. Here are some questions you could ask the interviewer or panel at the end of the interview to show that you are serious about being hired. Based on my credentials & background, do you have any reservations about my candidacy? What are the next steps in the interview process? Can you tell me more about the day-to-day responsibilities of this job? What do you think…
