Well there is more than just thinking about something for it to come into fruition. I am going to give you 4 tips to help you attract the things that you want. Since Big Rona has been here my days are filled with either shorts or joggers and always a t-shirt. To be completely honest, I have never been an eager to get dressed up person. I actually love joggers, sweat pants, shorts and t-shirts, it has been my happy fashion place. Yet, here I am during the Rona eager to get dressed, even if it is just the grocery store. I find myself putting on jeans to do the simplest of tasks. Although, I love my casual wear, it has been worn out! Since Big Rona has been visiting I have had a couple times when I absolutely needed to get dressed, and as excited as I am to put on a real outfit I wanted to maintain some of my casual relax wear. I had a couple reasons to get dressed; a funeral and work training, despite being specific events…

Being a woman who is Black and gay is nothing like being a woman, being a Black woman, or even simply being Black. Adversity comes with being a woman, being Black, and especially being a Black woman. Unlike Black men, Black women deal with adversity from men of all colors including Black men. Unlike white women, Black women deal with adversity because they are Black. Adding a dash of gay in the mix changes the game because not only do you deal with adversity for being Black and a woman, now you deal with adversity from Black women simply because you like the same sex. Do we need to make a list? Adversity can come from some or all of these places; non-Black men, non-Black women, black men, and straight Black women. Although there is a lot of adversity to talk about, let’s focus on the most important. As Black…

So this is my fourth week working from home. For many Nashvillians, they did not see this coming the way that I did because my entire family is in California. Most of them in Oakland experienced a Shelter-In-Place before any other area had even heard of it. I knew what was on the horizon but like many of us, I was not prepared for what was coming the next few weeks, and it is taking a toll on me mentally. Oh, and all the eating is trying to take a toll on me physically lol. All, and all, I was desperate to find something to make my life feel normal again.. well as normal as it could feel. After a week or so at home, I started to experience chest pain; it felt like someone had kicked me with two feet in my chest. Now, I didn’t have any restricted…

Being in control of your life is a tough task and is not for the faint of heart. It takes facing hard truths and opening yourself up to criticism. A good place to start learning how to be better at being yourself is through reading and learning from other people. As you all may know, I am finishing my bachelor’s degree and in one of my classes this semester I was required to read a book called The Art of Possibility by Benjamin Zander & Rosamund Stone Zander. This book talked about a number of ways to change your approach to life but one that stuck out to me the most is “Being the Board.” The idea of “Being the Board” is what the Zanders called the hardest of the principles to learn but the most important. The Art of Possibility was written by Benjamin Zander who is a conductor…

We have all been in interviews and they can be awkward. Minimize your awkwardness by preparing for your interview by going through test questions with a friend so that you are sharp and ready. When interviewing there is always an area I struggled with, which is when the interviewer asks me if I have any questions for them and I quickly say no. I learned from several HR professionals that asking questions and researching the company prior to the interview will give you an advantage. Here are some questions you could ask the interviewer or panel at the end of the interview to show that you are serious about being hired. Based on my credentials & background, do you have any reservations about my candidacy? What are the next steps in the interview process? Can you tell me more about the day-to-day responsibilities of this job? What do you think…

At my age completing college can be challenging and even overwhelming at times. When you are a teenager who is freshly coming into college you are likely to have one main responsibility, college. As an adult student, I have to manage more than just college. I must manage all my responsibilities including college, work, my personal life, and my health. Paying for school without any additional financial help makes those responsibilities even more challenging than it is. Up against the odds, I know that I am diligent and strong enough to not let my responsibilities keep me from my goal. I completed three semesters at a community college with one semester off before being admitted into Belmont, so I am mostly still mentally prepared to be in school. I know I will have to make more adjustments this spring semester after having a semester off. Balance and sacrifice are the…
